About Taranjit Singh Sandhu

Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a prominent figure in Indian diplomacy, was born on January  23, 1963, in Punjab, India. He comes from a distinguished family with a long-standing tradition of service to the nation and educationists. After completing his schooling from Lawrence School, Sanawar, Ambassador Sandhu pursued higher education with excellence, graduating from the prestigious St. Stephen’s college, University of Delhi. He furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master's degree in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he displayed a keen interest in global affairs.

In 1988, Ambassador Sandhu embarked on his illustrious career by joining the esteemed Indian Foreign Service (IFS), marking the beginning of his remarkable journey in diplomacy. Throughout his career, Ambassador Sandhu has held various significant positions, demonstrating exemplary leadership and diplomatic acumen. His dedication to advancing India's interests on the global stage has garnered widespread recognition and respect.

Ambassador Sandhu's diplomatic assignments have spanned diverse geographies and domains. From serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC to leading the United Nations Division in the Ministry of External Affairs, his contributions have been instrumental in shaping India's foreign policy objectives. His tenure as the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka saw significant advancements in bilateral relations, further solidifying India's strategic partnerships in the region. Additionally, his diplomatic expertise was evident during his tenure as the Consul General of India in Frankfurt and his role in opening India's new Embassy in Ukraine.

Our Legacy

Taranjit Singh Sandhu comes from a lineage deeply rooted in Sikh heritage and India's struggle for independence. His grandfather, Sardar Teja Singh Sandhu, was a revered figure in the Sikh community, known for his unwavering dedication to Sikh values and the nation's cause. He played crucial roles in historic movements like the Gurudwara Sudhar and Akali movements, bravely opposing oppressive British policies and inspiring many with his courage. Tragically, he sacrificed his life for the nation in Lahore Central Jail on July 17, 1926. Taranjit Singh Sandhu's father, Sardar Bishan Singh Sandhu, pursued scholarly endeavors, completing his doctoral studies in the United States from 1956 to 1958. Despite tempting opportunities abroad, he chose to return to India, driven by his love for the country. Taranjit Singh Sandhu's father, Sardar Bishan Singh Sandhu, also served as the principal of Khalsa College in Amritsar and later became the Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, reflecting his commitment to education and leadership in Sikh institutions.

He dedicated himself to Sikh education and society, leaving a lasting impact on Punjab and India's intellectual landscape. His mother, Mrs. Jagjit Kaur Sandhu, also pursued higher education in the United States during the same period, earning a doctoral degree. Upon returning to India, she served as the principal of a government college for women in Amritsar, instilling in Taranjit Singh Sandhu the values of service and education. Their collective legacy serves as a lasting inspiration, shaping Taranjit Singh Sandhu's upbringing and providing him with a strong foundation for his distinguished career in diplomacy and public service.
